In September 2013 I joined UNICEF as the Technology for Development (T4D) and Innovations Information Management Consultant in the Eastern and Southern African Region. The T4D & Innovations team is new addition to the Regional ICT Office and we are comprised of the Regional Chief of ICT, a Regional T4D Coordinator, and another consultant focusing on Capacity Building.

Over the course of 2013 there has been significant momentum surrounding T4D and Innovation across Eastern and Southern Africa. T4D and Innovation create many opportunities for programme delivery and monitoring, and almost all the Country Offices and Programme Sections in the region are beginning to integrate these solutions.

Since September my team and I have collected and analyzed T4D and Innovation project information through a survey developed by Global Innovation. Over 60 active projects were identified in the region, making Eastern and Southern Africa the most active region in the world applying T4D and Innovation solutions. But moreover, the survey highlighted the tremendous room for growth within the T4D and Innovation space.

However, despite the enthusiasm and potential in this growing space, the region is experiencing various levels of capacity in Country Offices to develop, pilot, and scale initiatives. Due to the varying level of maturity across Country Offices and Programme Sections, in 2013 the Regional ICT Office began responding to demand for technical assistance and support.

The Regional T4D and Innovations team is working hard to ensure that all Country Offices and programme staff have the necessary skills and knowledge to tap into the potential that T4D and Innovations offer. One way that we are trying to accomplish this is by writing blog posts on frequently asked questions, challenges and opportunities, trends, and anything else that emerges as an important and relevant subject to cover. Some of the posts will be longer and more informative whereas others will be short and sweet.

Stay tuned for the insights and updates on anything and everything concerning T4D and Innovation coming out of Nairobi!
